Everything you need to feel ready, show up, and give the outdoors a First Try

  • The First Try Collective is a free summer event series that helps Greater Pittsburgh residents try new outdoor activities in a welcoming, beginner-friendly environment.

  • No experience is needed. Each event is designed for beginners and includes basic instruction, support, and guidance so you can give the activity a comfortable First Try.

  • Yes. First Try Collective events are free to attend. Some events may require pre-registration due to space, equipment, staffing, or safety needs.

  • Events are designed for a wide range of ages, interests, and ability levels. Some activities may have specific age, mobility, or equipment requirements, so please review the details for each event before registering.

  • Yes. We encourage you to invite your friends, bring the full family, or attend solo. The First Try Collective is all about creating welcoming opportunities to enjoy the outdoors together.

  • Some events require pre-registration, while others may allow drop-in participation. Please check the event listing and registration link for each activity.

  • We recommend comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, water, sun protection, and any personal items you may need. Event-specific details will be included in each registration description.

  • For many events, basic equipment or materials will be provided. If you need to bring anything specific, it will be listed in the event details.

  • The First Try Passport is a punch card that helps you track the First Try Collective events you attend throughout the summer. Bring it with you to each event to receive credit for participating.

  • Anyone who completes three events in the First Try Summer Series will receive free ice cream during Outdoors for All Day at Allegheny Commons on Saturday, August 15. Bring your punch pass to receive your free scoops.

  • Use your First Try Punch Card to track participation in eligible activity collections. By attending the required number of events in a collection, you can submit an entry for a related raffle incentive during Outdoors for All Day on August 15th at Allegheny Commons.

  • Yes. Please bring your First Try Passport to Outdoors for All Day at Allegheny Commons on Saturday, August 15 to claim your ice cream, submit raffle entries, and celebrate the summer series.

  • Outdoor events may be adjusted, postponed, or canceled due to unsafe weather or site conditions. Registered participants should check their email and event page for updates before attending.

  • That is completely okay. The goal is to give something new a First Try. Whether you discover a new hobby or simply learn more about what you enjoy, showing up and trying counts.
